The Sydney Frocktails event was a magical evening filled with sewing-related conversations and laughter. It was a delight for the sewing community, and Sew Your Way was thrilled to be a part of it, bringing together sewing enthusiasts from all over.
Zoe and Lindsey, sewing besties from different states, collaborated remotely to create Zoe’s stunning outfit for the event. Using Zoom, they measured and prepped for Zoe’s chosen pattern, the Miranda Skirt by Style Arc—one of the fellow sponsors of Frocktails. Zoe envisioned a shiny gold skirt with a subtle tulle overlay, and the final look exceeded all expectations!
The fabrics were carefully chosen—metallic gold foil from The Remnant Warehouse and champagne tulle from Spotlight. The gold foil, a dance fabric with a bit of stretch, required a delicate touch. A tiny rolled hem helped keep the fabric’s shape and, after a careful press with a pressing cloth, the result was smooth and flawless.
The most challenging part of constructing the Miranda Skirt was attaching the tulle overlay. Initially, it seemed unnecessary to cut the tulle into six separate squares, but following the pattern's instructions proved essential (admittedly, not always our strong point). Managing 5.5 meters of lightweight bridal tulle in a single piece could have been tricky. Thankfully, Sew Your Way’s Magnetic Pin Dish/Pin Holder - Terrazzo Resin made pinning the delicate tulle much easier by keeping everything in place without scattering pins - an absolute lifesaver during the sewing process! The segmented tulle not only made the sewing process smoother but also created a breathtaking effect on the night of Frocktails. As Zoe sashayed about, the tulle swished gracefully, revealing glimpses of the shimmering gold underskirt, a standout feature for sure!
Zoe’s Miranda Skirt is the perfect example of how following a pattern's instructions, even when they seem unusual, can lead to fantastic results. The interplay between the gold foil and the flowing tulle created a show-stopping look that made for many compliments all night at Frocktails. I’ll say it once more, follow the instructions!
We also wanted to extend a big thank you to Caz from The Useful Box Sewing School for organising the event!
