Ganni Dupe – Tie Top Blouse

Jul 12, 2024

We’re sure if you’re a part of the Instagram sewing community (come and say hi to us!) your feed has been swamped with dupes of * that * tie top shirt by Ganni. Ours certainly has and of course, we wanted to jump on the bandwagon!

There are loads of existing tutorials of how to hack different blouse patterns however when Matchy-Matchy Sewing Club released the new Ruffle Brunch Set it rocketed to the top of our to-make sewing list. Find the pattern here.

Behold the satisfaction of pins and pin dish matching my fabric! Sigh, so dreamy!

The set features a princess seamed blouse with tie closures and a cute matching ruffle bottomed pair of pants. Obviously designed to be worn together, both pieces also work as separates. We’ve seen and loved our Northern Hemisphere friends wearing the same style of pants (often striped, eeek so sweet!) with a soft vintage tee, the perfect summer season outfit. And a tie-front shirt? Officially works with every bottoms option in your wardrobe! The big question is… to wear a bra or not to wear a bra? Read on for our opinion.

For our version, we used two vintage cotton seersucker tablecloths found in a regional op (thrift) shop. We love thrifting linens for sewing projects and cutting around any potential holes or stains from their former life just adds to the fun! Thrifting fabric offers the opportunity to have a genuinely one-of-a-kind piece and it goes without saying, is good for our lovely planet too.

With all the ruffles in this project, we definitely required two table cloths and just love the slight contrast the different colour palettes of each table cloth bring. Speaking of ruffles, a Sew Your Way magnetic wristband is the perfect tool for managing all the pins required when attaching the gathered ruffles.

We followed the pattern diligently and well, there’s only one word to explain how we feel. Obsessed! We love that feeling of finishing a sewing project and immediately imagining all the other versions we want to sew next.

Some Design Ideas

  • Using a larger, hand embroidered tablecloth (you never know what you will find at your local op shop) and hacking the sleeves to make them big and billowing.
  • Sticking with the thrifted linens theme – how about a tea towel mash up?
  • Or follow the pattern maker’s lead and make a matching set from some luscious linen for the swankiest pyjamas

So, what’s our take on wearing a bra with this gorgeous top? It is honestly so versatile that it can be worn with or without one and will look fab either way. It comes down to personal preference and if you are game to show a touch of flesh through the peep panel where it ties at the front. Although, even though this design purposely shows some skin, it is still surprisingly demure so, we vote, free the nip and try it without a bra! If you just can’t bear to go bra-free - try this hack… when tying the top bow, tie the first knot to your bra so the top and bra are actually tied together. Finish the bow like normal. This little trick will hide your bra and will make the top sit perfectly in place.
